Phillipine Annexation
Theodore Roosevelt resume
Occupation
After President McKinley took office, I was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy. I have been campaigning for war with Spain. It is in the best interest of the United States for our Navy to be strengthened, as it is imperative if we hope to be recognized as a world power.
Position on Issue
I am a firm believer in the annexation of the Philippines. If we hope to become a leading world nation, we must establish ourselves as a naval power. It is time to concentrate on our navy and to assert our dominance. It is also our duty to uphold the Monroe Doctrine, and to keep Germany and Japan from further oppression of western territories. Such lands are to be under our dominion, for our gain. It is also our duty as the “white” race to show inferior peoples the joys of civilization. It is our duty to Christianize the Philippino people and to assimilate them into our great culture. Annexation would also benefit us commercially, as it would open up new trade markets. Annexation of the Philippines is necessary for our nation to become a great Imperial power.
Reasons for Interest in Topic
As Assistant Secretary of the Navy, I believe it is in our country’s best interest to assert our naval power. I fought in the Spanish-American War and I know how oppressive other Imperialistic nations can be. It is our duty to secure the Philippines until they are ready for independence, so that they are safe from the likes of Germany and Japan. Imperialism is vital to our nation’s success, therefore I believe the annexation of the Philippines is in our best interest.
